Best New Smartphones Of First Quarter Of 2017

| July 22, 2017

During the first quarter of 2017, many smartphones appeared that became more powerful, more beautiful, and even more interesting than their predecessors. Frameless Samsung, compact LG with two cameras, a powerful glass flagship from HTC and other new items this year – in our selection.

Meizu M5S

The most budgetary representative of today’s collection of stars from the sky is not enough, but the Chinese manufacturer has equipped the Meizu M5S with a fingerprint scanner and fast charging. This design model differs little from its predecessor Meizu M3S: a 5.2-inch HD-screen, a 2.5D glass, a metal case, a 3000 mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner under the display. Inside is the eight-core MediaTek MT6753 with 3 GB of dual-channel LPDDR3 memory.

The developer has equipped his device with the One Mind function – it is positioned as “artificial intelligence”: the smartphone itself recognizes which applications are most often used and allows them to run faster. About the camera (the main one at 13 Mp and the front one at 5 Mp) users respond without enthusiasm, but from an inexpensive smartphone it’s silly to expect supernatural characteristics.

Nokia 5

Perhaps the loudest return to the market this year is Nokia smartphones. Inexpensive Nokia 5 is positioned as a perfectly balanced device on Android. It came out in an aluminum case, the screen is covered with a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass, and even in it there is a fingerprint scanner – this is not present for all budget smartphones.

The device runs on the “clean” latest version of Android and for it they promise further updates. In the rest it is a typical middle-class smartphone: as an iron – an economical Snapdrago 430 with 2 GB of RAM. Internal memory – only 16 GB, but you can add another 128 GB using a microSD card. The 5.2-inch screen received a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The camera uses a 13-megapixel sensor with autofocus and a two-color flash, the front module at 8 megapixel is wide-angle.

LeRee Le3

LeRee is a new smartphone from LeEco, which this time works with a large Chinese manufacturer Coolpad. LeRee Le3 is made in a design similar to all modern LeEco devices, which, in general, is not bad. In addition, it is equipped with a dual rear camera – each module of 13 megapixel (standard and monochrome). The sensitivity of both sensors is f / 2.0, the camera can shoot video in 4K and supports slow-motion shooting.

Qualcomm’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 MSM8976 chip with 3 GB RAM is worthy of low-cost smartphones. Autonomy is good – a battery with a capacity of 4060 mAh still can charge other devices, and the manufacturer promises up to two days without recharging. Android here works under the branded shell of the EUI – fast and simple. The model was equipped with a fast fingerprint scanner, they did not refuse from the 3.5-mm connector, but NFC and memory card support were forgotten, and this is with a 32 GB drive.

Moto G5 / G5 Plus

Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus – decent smartphones of the middle class from Lenovo with “clean” Android without any shells, besides in a metal case. Inside – simple Snapdragon 430 and 625 with 2 or 3 GB of RAM. The device shows normal autonomy with a battery of 2800 mAh (3000 mAh for Moto G5 Plus), the overall performance is also at a normal level.

In terms of photo opportunities there is nothing outstanding: “on paper” is a 13-megapixel main sensor with aperture f / 1.7 and 5-megapixel front, users note the average quality of the photo. But Moto G5 – one of the few smartphones that have slots for both SIM-cards and memory cards are divided. In both devices there is a fingerprint scanner combined with the “Home” button, and the case was protected from moisture penetration by applying a hydrophobic P2i coating.

ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom

In February, ASUS released a new camera phone: here and a dual camera (12 + 12 megapixel), and optical zoom, and at the same time amplified to 5000 mAh battery. With such a battery, the Zenfone 3 Zoom turned out to be rather thin (9 mm) – it would have been easy to design if it had not been for three touch buttons under the screen, which most manufacturers have already refused.

The dual camera module here can take pictures with the bokeh effect, and also has a 2.3-fold optical zoom and shoots the video in 4K. The front camera with a 13-megapixel sensor SONY IMX214 is also good. Of the remaining features of the device – 5.5-inch AMOLED-display, eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 with 4 GB of RAM and a full set of wireless communications.

Xiaomi Mi6

Xiaomi MI6 – the device with the top Snapdragon 835 and 6 GB of fast memory LPDDR4X, a dual camera, a capacious battery for 3350 mAh, a quick charge function and a fresh Android 7.1. The case was made glass and clad in a metal frame, and the top version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory received a ceramic lid and a gold edging.

A dual camera with 12 Mp modules each can take pictures with the bokeh effect, and also received a four-axis optical stabilizer and a double optical zoom – the quality of the images has significantly improved. Among users there are dissatisfied with noticeable frames around the screen, but, on the other hand, they do not interfere with the management of the smartphone and do not allow “pushing too much.” And in the rating of the most productive devices from the benchmark Antutu Mi6 is adjacent to the iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8, so the power reserve is solid.

OnePlus 5

Designers did not suffer for a long time with the appearance of the new 5.5-inch device OnePlus – it is almost a complete clone of the iPhone 7 Plus: matte metal shell, ceramic inserts, horizontally located dual sensor main camera. Yes, and Full-HD screen here, too, does not seek to be frameless. The rear camera has 16 and 20 megapixel modules, one of them being “telephonic”, and the front sensor received a solid 16 megapixel, but without autofocus and flash.

On board is Android 7.1.1 under the proprietary shell, the processor is the flagship Snapdragon 835. The smartphone is released in two configurations: with 6/8 GB of RAM and a drive for 64 or 128 GB. In tests, the device shows results similar to the top-end smartphones on the market. There is no memory card slot, but it is not very necessary here, but the waterproofness of the case would not hurt.

Huawei P10 / P10 Plus

At MWC 2017, Huawei was presented with two smartphones: P10 and P10 Plus. Looks devices equally, and for the flagships of 2017, too indecently like the products of the “apple” brand. The standard model received a 5.1-inch screen with a resolution of Full HD, increased – 5.5 inches with Quad HD. But the main thing here is a dual main camera from Leica, which turns the device into an interesting camera phone. Two 12 and 20 megapixel modules (color and monochrome) with aperture f / 2.2 make high-quality and clear pictures. Do not forget about the front camera, too, from Leica to 8 megapixels with aperture f / 1.9, true, without autofocus.

At the heart of both devices is the Kirin 960 processor on 8 cores with a frequency of 2.5 GHz, the autonomy is answered by a battery capacity of 3200 or 3750 mAh, there is support for fast charging of Huawei Super Charge 3.0. Both devices work on Android 7.0 Nougat running EMUI 5.1. Surprised that with a decent “iron” the manufacturer does not care about the protection of the body from dust and moisture, which is almost every competitor – the P10 simply does not. Moreover, the oleophobic coating is also “not delivered” – there is a version that it interfered with the operation of the fingerprint scanner. Users are encouraged not to remove the protective film from the glass Gorilla Glass – somehow not at all flagship.

HTC U11

The main chip of the flagship HTC is shrinking side faces as a control element, and it’s really interesting. In addition, the camera of this model is recognized as the best version of DxOMark (90 points). The main module received a resolution of 12 megapixels and technology HTC UltraPixel 3, the front – 16 megapixels. With performance, too, everything is in order: for the last month in some benchmarks HTC U11 left behind the flagships from Apple and Samsung – for this responsible appointed Snapdragon 835 with 4 or 6 GB of RAM.

Apparently, just in case, the developers have installed here at once three virtual assistants: corporate HTC Companion, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The device is protected from dust and moisture, though only by IP 67, and still it looks beautiful in its glass case with smooth transitions. Of the remaining features: 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of Quad HD, a drive of 64 or 128 GB, Android 7.1.1 Nougat under the proprietary shell Sense, support for NFC and LTE networks, battery capacity 3000 mAh, fast charging, and USB port Type-C.

LG G6

In February, the company announced the device with an almost frameless design and a slightly elongated 5.7-inch screen, and this became a new trend. At the same time LG has managed to place on the front panel and the camera, and the speaker, so the user does not have to endure the inconvenience. In the dual main camera, the second module is a widescreen module. By the way, the 5 megapixel front camera also has a wide-angle sensor with a viewing angle of 100 °, and there is also a face recognition function.

Yes, the “hardware” here last year’s sample – Snapdragon 821, coupled with 3 GB of RAM, lose performance on other flagships on Snapdragon 835, but the smartphone came out early this year, without waiting for the appearance of a new processor. The case became waterproof to IP68 standard and shockproof to MIL-STD-810G, and the battery for 3300 mAh with ease is enough for a day of use.

Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8 +

The current flagship Samsung was presented in March this year and appeared on sale in late April. It received a 5.8-inch frameless Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels, a new powerful Exynos 8895 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory. Internal memory of 64 GB is expanded with a MicroSD card. The physical button “Home” is no more – it is mounted on the screen. But the lack of frameworks on the display prompted the developers to place a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel: to get on it with your finger without looking, you need to contrive.

The device is equipped with a new face recognition function, an iris scanner, and the camera inherited it from last year’s flagship. On board there is a “full stuffing” of wireless technologies: GPS and GLONASS, two-channel Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, there are slots for two SIM-cards, a USB Type-C port is adjacent to a 3.5mm connector – this Many will be pleased. It’s a pity that the flagship “distinguished itself” with a practically useless button for calling assistant Bixby – in general, the device turned out to be very powerful and really top-notch.
