What to look for when choosing a modern smartphone and how important are its various characteristics?

Display Size

One of the trends in the smartphone market is the so-called “frameless” displays. This implies installing a large screen diagonal in smaller dimensions of the models. Another trend was the ratio of sides in smartphones 18: 9 or 19.5: 9, which allows you to store more useful information on the screen and it is more convenient to work with two applications in multitasking mode. The smartphone runs on a Snapdragon 835 processor with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, but there is no microSD card slot.

Screen

The smartphone screens are divided into three types of matrix: TN, IPS and AMOLED. TN – the most idle matrix, which is put in the most budgetary smartphones. It differs, weak color rendition and small viewing angles. IPS – the most common type of matrix (now often can be found in budget models). To the clear pluses can be attributed a good color rendering with good viewing angles. The holder of such a matrix is ​​LG G6. He was almost a pioneer among smartphones with minimal frames around the display. The device operates on a quad-core Snapdragon 821 processor with 4 GB of RAM. On the back cover is a double camera with 13 megapixels.

Increasingly popular is gaining OLED (AMOLED) matrix. Here, the brightness of each subpixel is adjusted separately, and the black color is achieved by turning off the pixels. Due to this, high contrast and maximum depth of black are achieved, and power consumption is reduced.

A bright representative is Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which is a 6.3-inch fablet with, perhaps, the best screen on the market. The speed of the system is responsible for the Samsung Exynos 8895 processor with 6 GB of RAM.

CPU

There are three main types of processors: Apple A, Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek. Processors from Apple are placed only on the iPhone and iPad, they are manufactured strictly under certain models, which allows to optimize the system’s performance, and therefore they have the maximum performance in the current generation. For example, the iPhone 8 Plus is gaining 217 385 points in the synthetic test AnTuTu Benchmark and occupies the first line in the rating of smartphones as of October 2017. The model works on a fresh version of the operating system iOS 11 with the updated A11 Bionic processor (25-70% more efficient than A10) and 2 GB RAM.

Android smartphones mainly work on Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and MediaTek (cheaper models). As a rule, Snapdragon is faster and more stable MediaTek, but usually its price is higher. The current line of Snapdragon is divided into three types of processors: 4xx, 6xx, 8xx. The larger the first digit, the higher the performance class. The total capacity is affected by the installed shell, optimization of the firmware by the manufacturer and other factors.

Smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 4X is equipped with a Snapdragon 435 processor and 2 GB of RAM. It has a 5-inch screen with HD resolution, so the speed of the work does not raise questions. Another feature of the device is a capacious battery at 4100 mAh, which is enough for a day and a half of active use.

Camera

Smartphones have long since expelled compact cameras from the market. Sometimes mobile phones are even used when shooting commercial videos. If the power of the processors is measured using synthetic tests in AnTuTu Benchmark and Geekbench, then the quality of mobile cameras is estimated on the DXOmark website. At the moment, the best camera on the version of this resource is the Google Pixel 2 smartphone and Google Pixel 2 XL, with 98 points. They use a 12-megapixel module with an aperture of f / 1.8.

Most manufacturers supply the smartphone with a second camera module to achieve blurring of the background. In this case, Google has proved that the same blur effect can be achieved by software image processing.

Further in the ranking in DXOmark follows the iPhone X with 97 points. The smartphone is equipped with a dual camera, capable of taking high-quality pictures and also making portraits with a beautifully blurred background. The video can be shot in 4K resolution at a frequency of 24, 30 or 60 frames per second, as well as in Full-HD resolution and at a frequency of 120 or 240 frames per second. The new Apple A11 processor with 2 GB of RAM not only provides fast operation of the entire system, but also is responsible for software processing of the photo.

Sound

MP3 players have long been out of our use. Most people listen to music on smartphones, because it’s more convenient. For a better sound, manufacturers began to supply smartphones with a separate high-quality sound chip, and some even put in a set of good-quality headphones.
